The theme of designing in the historic centre of the city is part of the broader strategy of the compact city which provides different modes of interpretation depending on the morphological and functional contexts. The opportunity to return to discuss the topic of the transformative potential of historic centres comes from the experience of the Erasmus Intensive Programme design workshop which took place in Parma last September in which several schools of architecture (ETSAB-Barcelona Universidad del Pais Vasco - San Sebastian , Wydział Architektury - Krakow; Facultat Architektur - Aachen, Faculty of Architecture - Department of Engineering and Architecture of Parma) met to exchange ideas on the topic of new facilities for the Oltretorrente campus, a part of the historical heart of the city of particular relevance in terms of its typo-morphological, but also social and cultural, aspects. The presentation of the workshop results, collected in a volume published by Festival Architettura Edizioni, recalls matters not unprecedented but which we can reinterpret in the light of new overall urban conditions that go beyond the theme of safeguarding the cultural heritage: the crisis of liveability in the new suburbs and the settlement sprawl to the recovery of the housing models of the historical city despite the social and functional impoverishment suffered by the same in recent years.
