BAUEN IM BESTAND: ITALY/GERMANY
As a question, “building within the built” (Bauen im Bestand) involves Time. A building or a site are constructed in relation to an existing (urban) fact, and above all “after” the existing fact. This (environmental) pre-existence has two aspects, one material and one spiritual: the “built” as everything that has been constructed, and the “built” as a set of values, (the cultural context), that precede the work and that must be poured back in to guarantee its historical continuity.
Only these values have the power to project the built into the future by means of the project (pro-jectum=throw forward).
On this day of the Festival of Architecture, the theme is investigated in relation to certain projects in Italy and Germany, among small-sized cities (Modena and Freiburg) and capitals (Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt): the regeneration of the Artisan Village in Modena as an occasion to redevelop the western quadrant of the city and as an experiment in functional mixité and social vitality; the case of “Freiburg Green City”, by now a model of virtuousness and practicability of a sustainable and shared renewal; the Tor Bella Monaca case in Rome, as an alternative hypothesis to the demolition of suburban neighbourhoods that enhances their formal, social and functional vocation; the Master plan for the Domrömer-Project in Frankfurt on Main.
